The South African Dance Board is an independent body registered as a non-profit organization with a mandate of developing policies and regulations guiding dance as a discipline in South Africa. It represents all provinces and serves as the official mouthpiece for the dance sector.
The Dance Board was formed through a consultative process with the sector at Bosberaad and is set to become operational on April 1, 2025.
Our vision is to see dance recognized as a cognitive discipline with a clear development strategy from early childhood to professional level, highly respected, fairly regulated, and seen as a vehicle for human capital and economic development.
Membership is open to all dance professionals, practitioners, choreographers, and organizations across all provinces of South Africa. Specific membership criteria will be developed as part of the policy development process.
Key programs include provincial consultations, capacity building, advocacy for the sector, policy development, administrative support, introduction of sector opportunities, and fundraising campaigns.
The Board is supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture but also seeks additional funding through membership fees, grants, sponsorships, event ticket sales, and fundraising campaigns from both government and private sector institutions.
